Chapter 20 - Church on the Hill, Siegendorf

Since we're still staying at Gasthaus Sigma, we see the church on the hill in Siegendorf every day. It's part of the view from our balcony. We've walked to it which is quite an effort since it's such an uphill climb. Anyone who knows me knows just how much I like to walk uphill. But here in Austria it's a given; if it's not a hill, it's stairs. There are stairs everywhere! Even when you go to a restaurant, the restrooms are downstairs. There isn't a building in Austria - that I've seen - that could pass the ADA. I'm going to do a future blog on the stairs.

This church is called All Saints. It was first mentioned in writing in 1366 and was restored and renovated several times in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The architecture is similar to most of the churches in Burgenland.

From our balcony you can see the church across the village. In
the evenings the steeple is lit from dusk until about 11 pm.

Approaching the church from the uphill street.

Two views of approaching the front of the church.

The side of the church.

The carved front door. I've tried to take pictures
of the inside through the grilled inner door, but
it's too dark inside. They keep the doors locked
all the time except during services to protect against
theft of the religious artifacts.

This family tomb is in the churchyard so it must
be an important family. The inscription is in
Croatian so we don't know.

  1. Do any of the churchs have bells (that ring?) I remember when traveling to Germany or France, one morning they started ringing at 5am! Talk about a rude awakening!
