We try to take pictures of all kinds of things over here, but it doesn't always qualify for a blog. So I thought I'd do one with random shots of things that captured my eye.
All around the countryside we've been seeing fields of sunflowers (grown for the sunflower oil). This is a field just outside of Siegendorf.
We're used to the wide shallow rivers of East Texas. This is the Wulka River which is usually not much wider than what we'd call a creek. But in June there were floods all over the area, and the Wulka overflowed its banks.
This is the pedestrian mall in Eisenstadt with shops and cafes.
That's me on the left in the turqoise shirt and checked pants.
This is the Plague Tower of Eisenstadt, erected in 1713, to thank God for deliverance from a bubonic plague epidemic.
This is a typical ambulance.
This is the church in nearby Mullendorf. I thought it was particularly beautiful.
This is the village's war memorial.
This is a typical Austrian roundabout (or traffic circle). They are the most efficient way to move traffic. They're all landscaped, and this is my favorite. It's in Eisenstadt near the Schloss Esterhazy where the composer Joseph Haydn spent most of his life. The landscaping in this roundabout has a musical theme.
Note the topiaries in the shape of musical signs and instruments.
Doors still fascinate me. This one in Eisenstadt is really striking.
We wondered why store mannikins like this one at the SCS Malls near Vienna have such protruding bellies.
And then there are the mundane tasks.
